Sarah training

Managing poor performance is one of the most challenging aspects of being a manager and carries risk if handled inconsistently or delayed. In this module, we will explore:

  • Distinguishing between:
  • Lack of skill or training
  • Capability issues
  • Conduct or behavioural concerns
  • Managing poor performance during probationary periods
  • The role of informal conversations, coaching and support
  • Introduction to formal conduct and capability procedures (manager‑level overview)
  • Using performance improvement plans effectively
  • Alternative strategies when performance conversations fail to change behaviour or improve performance.
  • Common mistakes managers make and how to avoid them.

By the end of this module, managers will be able to:

  • Recognise when performance issues require action
  • Take confident, fair and timely action
