The work bit

My love affair with Derby began 30 years ago when I came here to study. I am a proud alumna of the University of Derby, having completed my undergraduate Business Studies degree in the early 90s. In my final year, the HR and organisational behaviour modules especially appealed to me.

I went on to work in HR both internally, and latterly externally advising SMEs at Cooper Parry an East Midlands business advisory service. I have always enjoyed learning and simultaneously studied for my Post Graduate Diploma in HR, an MSc in strategic HRM, and became a Chartered Member of the CIPD in 2003.  I can often be found with my nose in a good employment law book swotting.

I left Cooper Parry to join EON UK, to gain experience of working with trade unions. I was also given many challenging projects, one as the talent lead for the UK Generation business, where I learnt about all things talent management and how to identify and nurture potential. I continued my love of learning and became qualified in mediation, psychometrics, job evaluation and latterly pensions auto-enrolment, teaching and a Mental Health First Aider. The world of HR is very broad!

I had always secretly harboured a desire to run my own business, And as I approached the age of 40, I thought it was now or never. So in 2011 I set up Loates Business Solutions Ltd. I quickly found out that no one could remember such a long business name and as everyone referred to us as Loates HR we established the trading name of Loates HR Consultancy. It soon became apparent that many of the client HR issues we were being called on to resolve could easily have been ‘nipped in the bud’ if only managers had been equipped with the appropriate skills and confidence to deal with them at an early stage. And so Loates Management Training was born!

We moved into our first office in 2015 with our first employee and my fellow director Dr Kevin Marks also joined the business. In 2019 with an expanded team we moved to larger offices at the scenic and historic world heritage site of Darley Abbey Mills, Derby.

I continue to be an active practitioner in my field, delivering both HR consultancy and training. I also teach on the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development HR courses and have been an Associate Lecturer and mentor on HR and business degree programmes for the University of Derby and Staffordshire University.

I am passionate about social mobility, paying it forward, relationships and supporting my community, I am a Trustee for Derby Quad, and a member of the Derby Renaissance Board.  We have a strong corporate social responsibility ethic and support many not for profits in the local community.

If you are passing at Darley Abbey Mills, drop in for a cuppa, we are always happy to have a natter!

The personal bit

I live in Derby with my partner and our cats Kiki and Kubo who are named after Japanese anime characters. I love cooking lots of great vegetarian food with Indian cuisine my favourite. I am sadly however a failed dosa chef on many occasions!

I love watching MasterChef and Great British Menu and then experimenting with new dishes on my partner. Like Annie I also love all things Marvel universe and I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to the history of cities and towns.

In our spare time we like to head out on our bikes around the local area and I enjoy playing basketball and boxing, when we are not in a pandemic.
