71% of employers say adapting to remote work has been a challenge. (Society for Human Resource Management survey, 2020). Home working and productivity, pre-pandemic was considered by some managers an oxymoron. The pandemic has brought about a step change in employer attitudes, with 28% employers citing that productivity has increased during home working, (CIPD,2020).

Managing a blended, hybrid team of homeworkers and work-based employees brings its own challenges. In today’s business landscape, an agile, flexible approach to performance management is needed. ‘Performance Management Must Evolve to Survive COVID-19’ (Gallup, 2020) highlights that new performance management approaches must be more ‘collaborative, adaptive and individualised.’  The Gallup research finds that the frequency of feedback with remote workers is critical for employee engagement.
